KLBJ’s Top Ten Songs of 2018

Top Ten Songs

Tis the season for lists! Every half-assed radio station blogger this side of the Mississippi is busy cranking out top ten lists – and we are no exception. The Rock of Austin has been filling your ears with music for 45 years while continuing to innovate and change with the times. This list should be a prime example of how we continue to be a force in the world of music and radio.

10) Time – Pink Floyd

Hey, disc jockeys are humans too and sometimes humans have to go to the bathroom. In comes this 11-minute doozy of a tune from Pink Floyd.

9) Pride and Joy – Steve Rays Vaughn

How can we have a list of top ten songs and not include Austin’s own pride and joy, guitar virtuoso Steven Raymond Vaughns? If there is one thing KLBJ does right, it is promote our local music scene and this is proof!

8) Zig Zag Wanderer – Captain Beefheart

If anything, we play this song too much (yes, we read your comments/complaints on our Facebook Page about this song being overplayed on KLBJ). That being said, however, there are still people who love it so much and request it every day.

7) Bees

Sometimes listeners just need a break. Nothing can lull one back into the sad reality that is our existence quite like the sound of bees.

5) Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

Talk about a game changer – if there is one song that does not sound like anything else on the list – it is this one. Smells Like Teen Spirit brings an entirely different attitude to rock radio and we look forward to hearing more from these kids from Seattle.

4) Baby Shark

How has a children’s YouTube bit become one of the biggest songs in the country and most played on KLBJ in 2018? Easy. It is a really good song.

3) Hotel California – The Eagles

What stared off as a joke between band members (one time Joe Walsh farted in the tour van and the gang remarked that they could never escape the smell) ended up forever changing songwriting. Fun fact about the tune: warm smell of colitis is a code for that fart.

2) Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin

Major shocker here! Many people thought this would be our top song of 2018 but alas, another one was played more. That shouldn’t take anything away from Stairway, however. The eight-minute epic might be considered by most too long for radio airplay but ever the bold, KLBJ knows this song is worth breaking all the rules for.

1) Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) – Pink Floyd

No surprise here! The top track of 2018 goes to the psychedelic boys from Britain. It’s true that a lot of rock stations in the country are afraid to play this politically charged anthem but not us! KLBJ continues to redefine what is rock radio and we will do so even more in 2019.
